The Movies

Sean saw his first movie last weekend and I've been intending to blog about it ever since. We went to see UP. I was a little worried about his reaction to the loud noise and the fact that it was in 3D... My worries were for nothing, thank goodness.

We prepared him in the car as best we could. With Sean, if you try to tell him what to expect too far in advance, he just gets more and more anxious and shuts down. So at the very last second we began to describe what it was going to be like. He took it all in stride and walked right into the theater without pause. One hurdle down.

We had intended to try and see the non 3D version thinking it would be easier for him to take in that way, unfortunately upon arriving at the theater we discovered that they were only showing the 3D version. We got popcorn, candy, went potty and headed in anyway. He accepted the glasses and even tried them on a few times without complaint. Second hurdle covered.

We sat for a while waiting for the movie to begin, all the while he keeps pushing his M&M package into my hands wanting me to open them. I keep telling him to be patient and wait for the movie to start. The lights went down and of course the sound system kicks in. He jumps and looks over at me wide-eyed. I can see the distress forming in his expression and I quickly open the M&M's and without missing a beat I said "The movie is starting so now you can eat your candy!" He smiled weakly at me, accepted his treat and then turned to T Beeza for some popcorn. Whew, narrowly escaped the third hurdle.

We wait through the previews while he feverishly consumes almost half of the bag of M&M's and then they tell us it's time to put on our glasses. I lean over and remind him not to try and pull them off and pray that nothing too scary jumps out at us during the movie. He puts them on without complaint and immediately the M&M's are forgotten. Yahoo, fourth hurdle down without a problem.

The movie begins and all treats are forgotten (wow!) and I look over and through the entire movie he hardly moves a muscle. He is so entranced that I thought he was actually asleep a couple of times and pulled down his glasses to find his eyes open as wide as he could get them. I can't say what I enjoyed more, the movie, or watching him see the movie. It was so fun! The final hurdle wasn't even a problem. SUCCESS! We now have an avid movie goer and without any struggle or anxiety!

These are the moments when being a mom is the best! I love watching my children discover new and exciting things for the first time. Being a mom changes you and allows you to see things about the world that have long been forgotten from the passing of your own distant childhood. I am so blessed to have two precious boys who remind me everyday to open my eyes wide and stand in rapture at the wonders of life!
